April came with more pandemic precautions for Pioneer Square, particularly in the form of plain particle-board paneling. The bare wood only encouraged vandals to leave graffiti adding to the Squarea’s sense of decay. That’s when the artist community stepped in to brighten the square with art. As dramatic as the shift from vibrant and thriving to boarded and dangerous was the shift from plywood everywhere to art every where.
